Saturday 8th August - Greenland Sea

I woke up at 6.30am after a smooth night's sailing. Over halfway, with about 350 miles to go.

I went up to have a cup of tea in the Observation Lounge and then brought one down for Wendy. Breakfast was with Sher and Greg. She runs hill marathons, one of which was at Cape Wrath. Greg played golf at Durness Golf Club while she ran.

The first lecture of the day was by Elizabeth on the History of Man in Greenland. It was moderately interesting. We then walked ten times round the deck before lunch out on the aft deck with Joao from Luxembourg/Portugal. He is a road engineer who now works for the European Investment Bank.

The weather is colder than when we left Svalbard and quite foggy and we can't see the horizon. The sea is like a millpond, with no wind at all. Only 200 miles to go till we reach Greenland.

The afternoon was filled with three lectures, Danny talking about plankton, Luke about the Greenland shark and finally Selvaggia on future cruises.

At 7pm we had the recap and briefing about tomorrow. It is not a 100% certainty we will get into Scoresby Sund because of ice. Still, we have to be positive!

We had a drink in the bar and were joined by Ernie and Heidi from Zurich. Then we all went and had dinner together. They are an interesting couple and we had a fun evening.

There were less than 80 miles to go when we got back to the cabin and the weather is better with some clear skies. We should arrive in Greenland early in the morning.
